Why Solid DNS:
the gory details
If the talk below doesn't make much sense to you, you probably want to read our introduction to DNS.
Quick propagation with NOTIFY
When you are busy rolling out zone changes, you don't to wait for your secondaries.
That's why the industry standard DNS NOTIFY was invented. From your master, send a NOTIFY to the Solid DNS slaves, and they will immediately update. No delays, no waits.
Unfortunately, many secondary DNS providers lack support for this important feature. Many of them update only once an hour.
Solid DNS fully supports this standard - making zone updates a matter of seconds, not hours.
Quick propagation without NOTIFY
Unfortunately, not all master servers will support DNS NOTIFY.
But, even without support for NOTIFY in your DNS server, you can still benefit from
our quick propagation.
The web interface allows you to manually trigger an immediate update of our slave servers for your domain.
This will be processed within 10 seconds.
DNSSEC
DNS is one of the most important systems for your reachability.
Unfortunately, it is also one of the most insecure.
By manipulating DNS, attackers can snoop in on most kinds of internet traffic
without users noticing any change.
DNSSEC resolves many of the security issues in DNS. It allows DNS replies to be authenticated and verified. An attacker without the keys for the domain, can not fabricate authentic answers.
DNSSEC on your zone means that even Solid DNS can't manipulate your zone, if you host it on our servers. Not that we would want to do that :)
Unfortunately, secondary DNS services rarely support this. And without support from all your slaves, you can never deploy DNSSEC. The Solid DNS name servers fully support DNSSEC, allowing you to deploy it for your zones.
IPv6
IP addresses are limited. And those of the commonly used IPv4 protocol, will run out soon.
IPv6 has been invented as a sort of replacement, providing many many more addresses and various other improvements. It is the widely accepted technology of the future.
The Solid DNS servers are all fully available over IPv6.
We demand our connectivity over IPv6 to be of the same high standards as IPv4.
For us, IPv6 is not a test or a toy - it is a production service.
